Turbo Vado 3.0 Step-Through (Gen2)
Description
This bike features a Shimano FH-MT400-B centerlock rear hub which requires a replacement end cap to be compatible with PLANET3! Please check the “Useful links” section for a video on how to replace this end cap before continuing with the rest of the installation. This requires two 17mm cone wrenches (3mm thick) which you need to borrow/steal OR simply take the rear wheel to a friendly neighborhood bike shop and let them replace this for you. No sensor carrier replacements, no sensor relocations on the Vado – all the steps are done at the hub/wheel. The instructions for Rocky Mountain are IDENTICAL except for the dual planet configuration step. Specialized only needs a single planet which allows full derestriction (3:1 ratio and 3x increase in speed limit). Also, you use the cassette tool for the original lockring/magnet removal instead of the bottom bracket tool.
PLANET3 is a planetary gear set which reduces the rotation speed of the magnet used by the wheel speed sensor three times. For every three full rotations of the rear wheel, the magnet completes just one full rotation – effectively making the bike think it’s doing 1/3 the speed it is actually doing, thus increasing the pedal assist speed limit by a factor of 3. For the Specialized models sold on EU/UK market this translates into a speed limit increase from 25 to 75 km/h (15.5 to 47 mph), while the US and Canada models limit is raised from 20 to 60 mph. If it is not obvious from the previous description of how the device works, the speed display will show 1/3 of the “real” speed the bike is moving at. Another byproduct is that the millage will be 1/3 of the “real” millage from the moment you install the device. This inaccurate display of speed/distance never used to be an issue because most Specialized e-bikes came without a screen (except road going versions), but since Vado is mostly a road-going bike I’m including this warning: IF you feel that you REALLY NEED to be able to see your speed AND you don’t feel like multiplying by 3 to get the real value – PLANET3 might not be for you. Most users never give this a second thought and realize that getting rid of the speed limit takes priority.. but, to each their own.
This is for a non-IGH Vado/Como Gen2 models. IGH models are NOT COMPATIBLE with mechanical PLANET3 because of their internally geared rear hubs and belt drives. If you have a IGH model, please visit PLANET3 for IGH models.
